SEO Analyst Salary figures can vary by tens of thousands of dollars, which makes a single average almost useless. Payscale lists entry-level pay at $46,320, while Glassdoor reports an average of $85,150. Add “senior” to the title, and Glassdoor raises the figure to $103,105. These numbers describe the same job family, but they point to completely different careers.
Most salary guides create this confusion by publishing one average and expecting you to decide where you fit. They group junior analysts who export ranking reports at small agencies with technical specialists who manage migrations across million-page websites. The midpoint represents neither role accurately.
This guide gives you a more useful way to calculate your market value. It starts with a documented base salary, then adjusts that figure using the five factors that influence pay most: seniority, AI search expertise, employer type, location, and the revenue your work can generate.
One of these factors currently increases advertised pay by roughly 20%, yet most SEO analysts still fail to prove it on their CV.
The base rate: what SEO analysts earn in the US
Here is what the major sources report for a US-based analyst in 2026.
| Source | Reported average | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glassdoor | $85,150 | $63,862 to $115,014 | 1,316 self-reported salaries, June 2026 |
| ZipRecruiter | $82,573 | $53,500 to $112,500 | Postings plus third-party data, June 2026 |
| Salary.com | $80,501 | $73,601 to $92,101 | 90th percentile $102,662, July 2026 |
| Payscale (experienced) | $71,379 base | $59,000 to $107,000 | Self-reported base only |
| Payscale (entry-level) | $46,320 base | $37,000 to $58,000 | Self-reported base only |
Use $80,000 to $85,000 as your US base rate for a mid-level role. Hourly, that works out to roughly $39 to $41, and ZipRecruiter’s own hourly figure of $39.70 lines up.
For senior titles the estimates converge, which is a useful signal. Glassdoor reports $103,105 for a senior SEO analyst and ZipRecruiter lands within $600 at $102,527. Salary.com is more conservative at $96,267. Two very different methodologies arriving at nearly the same number means the senior band is real.
Why five sources give you five different answers
The spread isn’t sloppiness. Each source measures something different, and knowing which one you’re holding is the difference between walking into a review with a number and walking in with an argument.
Self-reported versus advertised. Glassdoor and Payscale collect what employees say they earn. ZipRecruiter and Indeed scrape what employers advertise. Payscale’s sample skews junior, which drags its average down. Advertised ranges skew high, because job ads are marketing documents.
Base versus total compensation. Payscale separates base from bonus and profit sharing. Glassdoor often blends them. A $70,000 base with a $12,000 bonus can appear as either figure depending on which page you land on.
“Analyst” covers five jobs. At a 20-person agency, an SEO analyst runs audits, writes briefs and manages three accounts. At an enterprise retailer, an SEO analyst builds dashboards in BigQuery and never touches content. Same title, different pay grade.
Sample size. Glassdoor’s US figure draws on 1,316 submissions. Some country pages run on fewer than 30. Treat a small-sample average as a rumor.
The practical rule: use advertised ranges when you’re job hunting, and self-reported data when you’re asking for a raise where you already work.
The five multipliers that set your number
Before the detail, here is every documented modifier in one place. Note the last row.
| Factor | Effect on pay |
|---|---|
| Senior IC to manager | +$25,475 at the median |
| AI search skills in the job description | +20.5% ($117,500 vs $97,500) |
| AI search terms in the job title | +27% ($113,625 vs $89,438) |
| Team lead title vs analyst title | +$14,177 |
| In-house vs agency at 10 to 15 years | +$16,000 |
| Working in the top-paying metro (NYC) | +14% vs national |
| Eight extra years of tenure, same scope | +$8,273 |
Eight years of loyalty is worth less than a third of one promotion. That is the entire thesis of this article: pay tracks scope, not time served.
Multiplier 1: Seniority, and where the real jump sits
Advertised postings give the cleanest view of the ladder. A 2026 analysis by Search for Hire and SalaryGuide covering 1,175 full-time US SEO listings posted between April 2025 and March 2026 found a median of $92,500 across all SEO roles, with the middle 50% spanning $72,500 to $125,000.
| Level | Median advertised salary |
|---|---|
| Entry level | $62,500 |
| Mid-level | $73,000 |
| Senior | $82,750 |
| Manager | $108,225 |
| Director and above | $133,750 |
Two things stand out.
The step from senior individual contributor to manager is worth about $25,000, the single largest jump on the ladder. If you are three years in and optimising for income, the highest-leverage move is not another certification. It is getting one direct report.
The market is also top-heavy. A separate Semrush study of 3,900 SEO listings found that Director, VP and Head-level postings made up 59% of all listings, with a median of $130,000 for senior roles against $71,630 for everyone else. Companies are pushing execution toward tooling and hiring for judgment.
Compare that ladder to Salary.com’s tenure curve, which runs from $78,235 for analysts with under a year of experience to $86,508 for those with more than eight. That is an 11% gain across an entire career. Sitting in an analyst seat for a decade is not a raise strategy.
Multiplier 2: AI search skills, worth about 20%
This is the biggest change in SEO compensation since 2023, and it is still missing from most salary pages.
Across 13,779 US SEO postings with advertised salaries, roles asking for AI search, GEO , AEO , LLMO, and SXO skills carried a median of $117,500 against $97,500 for roles that did not. That is a 20.5% premium, and it held at both the 25th and 75th percentiles. In the narrower Search for Hire dataset, postings with AI in the job title paid a median of $113,625 versus $89,438 without, a 27% gap that widens to $35,250 at Director level.
Three details make this usable rather than just interesting.
The premium does not exist at entry level. AI mentions in entry-level descriptions carried a slightly negative premium of 2.3%. Nobody pays a graduate more for knowing ChatGPT. The signal turns positive at mid-level (+14.3%) and compounds upward.
The premium is for building, not prompting. Recruiters draw a hard line between candidates who use AI tools and candidates who architect systems with them: automated workflows, Python scripts, API integrations, reporting pipelines that survive the client count doubling. Prompt engineering is table stakes now.
Filtering by job title hides most of these roles. Only 11% of SEO job titles mention AI, but 54.9% of job descriptions require it. Kevin Indig’s independent analysis found the same pattern and a 25% median lift for the description bucket. Searching boards for “AEO” or “GEO” in the title misses roughly four in five of the roles paying the premium. Search the full description instead.
The window is also closing. Mentions of AI search skills rose from 12.2% of SEO ads in December 2025 to 20.3% by mid-2026. Premiums exist because a skill is scarce, and this one is becoming standard.
Multiplier 3: In-house, agency, or freelance
In-house pays more and hires more. Roughly 65% of SEO openings are in-house, and in-house practitioners with 10 to 15 years of experience earn about $16,000 more than agency peers at the same level.
Agencies pay less and teach faster. Three years across a dozen client sites builds a broader pattern library than three years on one domain. That trade is worth making early and expensive to keep making past year five.
Freelance has the highest ceiling and no floor. One 2026 aggregation put a senior in-house individual contributor at roughly $123,545 median against $202,895 for a freelance specialist at the same tenure. The premium only exists with a portfolio that justifies the rate, and billable hours rarely exceed 60% of a working week once sales and admin are counted. Practitioners with real AI search experience report charging $150 to $300 an hour, though that comes from industry commentary rather than a structured survey, so treat it as a ceiling.
Ahrefs surveyed 439 manually verified SEO service providers and found that freelancers charged an average of $71.59 an hour. Across all provider types, 90% charged $150 an hour or less, while only 4.1% charged more than $200. Even providers with more than ten years in business averaged $118.35 an hour, which confirms that rates above $200 represent the top end of the market rather than the norm.
Multiplier 4: Location and your remote band
Location still moves the number, even with 41.8% of SEO roles now advertised as fully remote.
ZipRecruiter ranks Washington state first for SEO analyst pay, followed by DC and New York, with Washington running about 13.3% above the national average. Glassdoor puts the New York City average at $96,922, roughly 14% above the national figure, with top earners reaching $171,277. Salary.com’s state averages run from $89,101 in DC and $88,701 in California down to roughly $72,700 in Arkansas.
The question that matters more than your city: ask which band model the employer uses. Some companies run national bands and pay one rate regardless of address. Others run location-adjusted tiers. That single answer tells you your ceiling before you name a number, and it is a normal thing to ask on a first call.
Outside the US, the same title pays very differently:
| Country | Typical pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £38,500 (£30,500 to £60,600) | Glassdoor, 2026 |
| India | ₹295,899 base (₹138,000 to ₹520,000) | Payscale, 2026 |
| Philippines | ₱542,514 (₱387,355 to ₱654,815) | ERI, 2026 |
One pattern holds everywhere outside the US: client geography matters more than your city. An analyst in Manila or Bangalore billing a US or Australian client earns multiples of the local average while the employer still pays below a US in-house rate. For anyone in a lower-cost market, that arbitrage is the fastest available raise. Worth noting that European pay is not moving in the same direction as US pay, with UK senior salaries reportedly falling year over year, so verify against local postings before anchoring to a US figure.
Multiplier 5: What a visit is worth to your employer
SEO pay tracks the revenue per session of the business far more closely than it tracks task difficulty. An analyst at a B2B software company where one qualified demo is worth several thousand dollars sits inside a bigger budget than an analyst doing harder work at a low-margin retailer.
Glassdoor’s 2026 industry data reflects this: retail and wholesale leads at a median total pay of $84,125, financial services follows at $83,703, information technology at $73,209 and media and communication at $70,613.
A sideways move into a better-funded sector often pays more than a promotion inside a poorly funded one.
Which parts of the job actually pay
Most analyst roles pull from three buckets, and the mix sets the price.
- Measurement and reporting. Rank tracking, GA4 and Search Console dashboards, monthly summaries.
- On-page and content. Keyword research, briefs, internal linking, metadata, gap analysis.
- Technical diagnostics. Crawl analysis, indexation, structured data, JavaScript rendering, migrations.
Weight your week toward the first bucket and you’re priced like a marketing coordinator. Weight it toward the third and you’re priced closer to a data analyst, who earns more.
The quick self-test: if traffic drops 18% and you can answer why by opening a log file, a crawl and a BigQuery table rather than by scrolling a dashboard, you belong in the higher band.
The specific skills that move you there:
- Measurement and attribution. Appears in 79% of SEO listings, making it the most requested skill in the field. Connecting organic performance to revenue is what separates an analyst from a reporter.
- SQL and BigQuery. The Search Console interface caps you at 1,000 rows. Bulk export removes the cap, and querying it puts you in analyst territory.
- Log file analysis. The only direct evidence of what crawlers actually do on your site. Very few analysts can do it well.
- JavaScript rendering diagnostics. Knowing why content visible to users isn’t visible to a crawler, and explaining the fix to an engineer in their language.
- Migration experience. One clean domain or platform migration is among the strongest lines on an SEO CV, because the downside of a bad one is enormous.
- Automation architecture. Python, APIs and workflow tools that convert manual reporting into a system.
Pick two you don’t have. Ship something real with each. That beats waiting out another year of tenure.
Build your own benchmark in 30 minutes
Aggregators lag the market and blend incompatible roles. Your own spreadsheet will be more accurate than any figure on this page.
- Pull 15 to 20 live postings matching your target title, seniority and location or remote band. Prioritise ones with disclosed ranges. Roughly four in ten SEO postings now list a salary, so the sample exists.
- Log four fields for each: range, level, industry, remote policy.
- Split reporting-weighted roles from technical roles using the listed responsibilities. The two groups separate visibly.
- Take the median of the top of each range within your group, not the average of all 20. Employers post ranges they expect to negotiate down from.
- Price your differentiators. Add a premium for each scarce skill you can evidence: a completed migration, SQL fluency, revenue reporting, a regulated industry.
- Rerun it every six months. Salary data goes stale faster than most SEO advice.
One timing note. SEO postings peaked sharply in January 2026 at 395 unique roles, more than double most other months. Prepare in Q4, apply in January.
How to negotiate it
Let them name the range first, then anchor near the top of it. If a posting already tops out near your target, the hardest part is done.
Argue from outcomes, not tenure. “I led a migration of 90,000 URLs with organic revenue back to baseline in seven weeks” beats “five years of SEO experience.” Rehearse one sentence with a currency figure and a timeframe in it.
Ask for the title alongside the money. A “senior” prefix compounds across your next two jobs. ZipRecruiter found team lead roles pay about $14,177 above the analyst average, and the title travels with you.
Negotiate before the number goes to HR. Once it’s submitted for approval, flexibility shrinks.
If base is capped, move elsewhere in the package. A written six-month review with defined targets, a signing amount, a training budget, or a title change all carry real value. Get any promised review date in writing, because vague assurances convert poorly.
The takeaway
The average SEO analyst salary describes nobody. What sets your number is scope: how senior you are, whether you can diagnose rather than report, and whether you can build with AI rather than prompt it. Eight years of tenure at flat scope is worth about $8,000. One promotion is worth $25,000. AI search capability is worth about 20% right now.
Do one thing this week. Open 15 live SEO postings with disclosed ranges, take the median of the top of each, and compare it to what you earn. If the gap is over 10%, you have your next conversation and the data to open it with.
Frequently Asked Questions About SEO Analyst Salary
What is the average salary for an SEO analyst?
Roughly $80,000 to $85,000 in the US in 2026, or about $39 to $41 an hour. Glassdoor reports $85,150, ZipRecruiter $82,573 and Salary.com $80,501. Senior analysts average close to $100,000.
What is the salary of an SEO analyst for a fresher?
Entry-level pay clusters between $46,000 and $62,500 depending on whether you use self-reported data or advertised postings. Payscale’s entry-level average is $46,320 base; the median entry-level advertised salary is $62,500.
How much does an SEO analyst make per hour?
About $39.70 at the US average, rising to roughly $50 at senior level. Freelancers need materially more to cover unbilled time, tools, tax and insurance.
Can an SEO analyst earn six figures?
Yes. Salary.com places its 90th percentile above $100,000 and ZipRecruiter’s 75th percentile is $112,500. Getting there usually means a senior or lead title, a high-cost metro, a well-funded vertical, or a scarce technical specialisation.
Do certifications raise an SEO analyst’s salary?
Employers treat Google Analytics, Semrush and HubSpot credentials as screening signals rather than pay triggers. The evidence for a direct bump is weaker than the evidence for demonstrated automation and measurement skills.
No credible SEO-specific study has established a direct salary premium for Google Analytics, Semrush or HubSpot certifications. The strongest causal evidence comes from a randomized experiment involving more than 800,000 Coursera learners: making credentials easier to share increased reported new employment by 6% and certificate-related employment by 8%, but the study did not identify a corresponding wage increase. Treat certifications as hiring signals, not as a fixed percentage to add to your salary benchmark.
Do I need a degree?
Not to do the job. It occasionally clears HR filters at large enterprises. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no separate category for SEO analysts; its closest grouping, market research analysts and marketing specialists, reported a median annual wage of $76,950 in May 2024.
Is SEO analyst a good career in 2026?
The field is transitioning rather than shrinking. SEO has held steady at 11% to 12% of all marketing job postings across the past year, and the BLS projects 7% growth for the broader marketing specialist category from 2024 to 2034. What changed is the job description: one in five SEO ads now also asks for AI search skills.
