Search processing happens in stages, and each stage can fail independently. A page can be crawled but not indexed. It can be indexed but rendered incompletely, so half the content Google stores is missing. It can render perfectly and still be filed as a duplicate of a URL you didn’t know existed.

Honest answer: often not yet.

A 60-page brochure site on WordPress with a mainstream theme contains maybe four hours of technical work in total. Hiring a specialist for that is calling a structural engineer because the room feels bland.

Judge cost against the size of the constraint, not against the invoice. A crawl issue suppressing 40% of a product catalogue is worth far more than a few thousand dollars in audit fees.   6. Freelance marketplaces. Real talent exists, buried under an enormous volume of automated-audit sellers. Workable if you vet hard, painful if you don’t.

Skip anyone who cold-emails you claiming they found critical errors on your site. That’s a template with your domain pasted into it.

How to vet a technical SEO specialist: 5 questions

You don’t need to be technical to test one. You need the right questions.

1. “Walk me through a problem you diagnosed that a crawl tool wouldn’t have caught.” Good: a story with a mechanism and a wrong first hypothesis in it, because real diagnosis involves being wrong once. A CDN rule serving different HTML to bots. A canonical pointing at a staging domain. Bad: a description of a tool’s output.

2. “How do you decide whether a page’s problem is technical, content, or authority?” Good: a process of elimination that starts by confirming indexation, then rendering, then comparing against pages that do rank. Bad: they assume it’s technical. Their hammer, your nail.

3. “How do you prioritise when an audit surfaces 200 issues, and what would you not fix?” The willingness to deprioritise is the clearest marker of experience. Junior practitioners fix everything the tool flagged. Senior ones ignore most of it deliberately and can tell you why.

4. “Show me a ticket you wrote for a developer.” The single most revealing artefact in the whole process. You want a described problem, affected templates, sample URLs, expected behaviour, acceptance criteria, and a validation step. Clear tickets are what you’re actually buying.

5. “How will you know whether this worked?” Good: indexation of priority page groups, crawl efficiency, field Core Web Vitals, impressions and clicks by page type, organic conversions, with a stated timeline. Bad: anyone promising specific ranking positions by a specific date.

Then commission a small paid trial. Two to four hours reviewing a defined section of your site, delivering the top three issues with reasoning and estimated impact. Pay for it. Good candidates refuse to do it free, which is itself a positive signal, and the output tells you more than any interview.

  • Every warning marked critical
  • Confusing robots.txt blocking with noindex
