What is Negative SEO?
Negative SEO is a deliberate attempt to damage another website’s visibility in unpaid search results. The term can cover attempts to manipulate backlinks, unauthorized changes to a website, and related reputation attacks such as fake reviews.
If you suspect an attack, start by checking your website’s security, Google Search Console messages, and recent site changes. A traffic drop or an alarming backlink report gives you something to investigate. Neither identifies the cause by itself.
Prioritize active harm. If visitors encounter malicious redirects or your website is unavailable, involve your hosting provider or security team immediately. If your only concern is unfamiliar backlinks, gather evidence before removing or disavowing links.
Can negative SEO actually hurt your website?
Website sabotage can cause real damage. Google documents compromised sites containing injected content, malicious code, and redirects. Security problems can also trigger warnings in search results or browsers. Those are concrete problems requiring action.
Google says most websites do not need to disavow backlinks. A surge in unwanted links does not establish that those links caused a ranking decline.
Separate three questions:
- What happened? For example, new links appeared or a page began redirecting elsewhere.
- What explains the impact? Look for a mechanism connecting the change to lost visibility or interrupted visits.
- Was it deliberate sabotage? Proving intent or identifying an attacker requires additional evidence.
You can fix a verified problem without knowing who caused it. Conversely, discovering suspicious activity does not establish that it worked.
Warning signs and the right first response
Use this table to choose an investigation path. These signals are not diagnoses of an attack.

The last row deserves prompt attention regardless of intent: persistent server errors can cause Google to reduce crawling and eventually remove affected URLs from its index.
How to investigate suspected negative SEO
1. Confirm what changed in search traffic
Google Search Console reports how your website performs in Google Search. In its Performance report, compare equivalent periods, such as the latest complete 28 days with the preceding 28. For a seasonal business, also compare with the same period last year when data is available.
Check clicks and impressions by page, query, country, and device. Is the loss concentrated in one section, or spread across the website?
Consider other explanations, including technical errors, search updates, seasonal demand, and a recent migration. Google’s traffic-drop guide recommends examining the affected pages and broader search trends.
If Google Analytics shows fewer sessions from Google organic search while Search Console clicks remain steady, investigate measurement changes as another hypothesis. Match dates and filters first. Clicks and sessions use different definitions, so their totals will not match exactly.
2. Check Manual Actions and Security Issues separately
Open both reports in Search Console:
- Manual Actions: A Google reviewer has identified a violation of Google’s spam policies. The report identifies the issue and its scope.
- Security Issues: Google has detected a security problem, such as hacked content or malware. Inspect the reported issue and example URLs.
A clean Manual Actions report means no manual action is reported. It does not rule out technical problems or changes caused by automated ranking systems. Similarly, an absence of security alerts should not override direct evidence of unauthorized changes.
3. Inspect affected pages and your own change history
Choose a few pages that lost meaningful traffic. Use URL Inspection to examine their indexing status, last crawl, and Google-selected canonical, which is Google’s chosen representative URL for duplicate content.
Distinguish the stored indexing information from the live test. The live test checks the page’s current accessibility and potential indexability; it cannot tell you which canonical Google will ultimately select.
Compare your findings with recent releases, content edits, plugin changes, redirects, and access logs. Ask your developer to check unexpected indexing restrictions.
For example, a noindex instruction can remove a page from Google after Google crawls and processes it. Blocking crawling in robots.txt is different and does not reliably remove a URL from search.
4. Review suspicious backlinks in context
A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Start with Search Console’s Links report, then use any existing backlink tool to investigate patterns.
Review:
- Which domains link to you and which pages they target.
- Whether many reported links come from a small number of websites.
- The link text and surrounding content.
- Whether your team or a previous agency arranged the links.
- Whether the timing and affected pages fit the traffic decline.
Search Console’s report is a sample, not a complete inventory, and can include links that no longer exist. Do not treat an export as a perfect record of current links or their creation dates.
Use a third-party “toxicity” score to prioritize inspection. The score alone does not establish a Google penalty, an attacker’s identity, or the cause of lost traffic.
When should you disavow backlinks?
Disavowing asks Google to disregard specified backlinks when assessing your site. Google recommends it only when both conditions apply:
- You have a substantial number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality inbound links.
- Those links have caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action.
Evidence of links bought to manipulate rankings matters when assessing a likely manual action. A tool’s warning score alone is insufficient. Google recommends trying to remove qualifying links first and warns that misusing the disavow tool can harm search performance.
If the criteria apply, follow Google’s upload instructions carefully. The tool does not support Domain properties, and uploading a new list replaces the existing list for that property. Preserve existing exclusions that remain appropriate.
For an actual manual action, complete the required cleanup and submit a reconsideration request explaining the issue, your fixes, and their results. Uploading a disavow file alone does not complete that process.
Respond to the problem you can verify
If your website was compromised
Have your host or security specialist preserve relevant logs, identify the entry point, remove unauthorized changes, and secure affected accounts. Restore from a known clean backup when appropriate, patch the vulnerability, and change compromised credentials. Restoring pages without closing the entry point leaves the underlying problem unresolved.
After fixing all reported security issues throughout the website, test the fixes and request a review through the Security Issues report. Keep the issue record until the review is resolved.
If another website copied your content
Save the original and copied URLs, publication records, and dated drafts. First establish whether republication was authorized.
Duplication alone does not automatically earn your original page a penalty. Google’s guidance explains that content appearing at multiple URLs does not itself cause a manual action.
Check your original page’s indexing and canonical information. Keep your preferred URL consistent in internal links, sitemaps, and canonical tags. These signals help communicate your preference; they do not guarantee that Google will select it or prevent someone from copying the page.
For suspected copyright infringement, review Google’s reporting requirements and submit the specific affected URLs when appropriate. Removal from Google does not remove the content from the source website.
If reviews appear manipulated
Save review URLs, screenshots, dates, and evidence of coordination or a conflict of interest. Describe the policy violation when reporting them.
Google prohibits fake engagement, including reviews that do not reflect a real experience and content posted on a competitor’s business to undermine its reputation.
A negative review is not automatically fake. Google says disagreement or dislike is not a reason for removal. Use its reporting process for policy violations and respond professionally to legitimate customer complaints.
If a valuable backlink disappeared
Check whether the linking page was edited, moved, or removed. If the loss matters, contact the publisher through a known channel and ask what changed.
If someone requested removal while claiming to represent your business, ask the publisher to preserve that request and clarify who is authorized to act for you. A missing link by itself does not prove impersonation.
A worked example: suspicious links and falling traffic
Hypothetical example, not a reported case study: A small US retailer discovers 8,000 unfamiliar backlinks in a tool during the same month that organic clicks fall by 30%. Its team suspects a competitor.
Assume the investigation finds:
- Search Console reports no manual action or security issue.
- Most of the click loss affects product-category pages.
- A recent template release added
noindexto those pages accidentally. - URL Inspection shows Google crawled affected pages after the release and reports the indexing restriction.
- Most unfamiliar links point to the homepage, which has not suffered a comparable decline.
The indexing restriction is the strongest supported explanation for the affected category pages. Google documents that processing noindex removes a page from search results.
The next action is to remove the unintended restriction, test the corrected pages, and monitor subsequent crawling, indexing, and clicks. The team can keep the backlink findings on record without assuming they explain the decline.
This example does not prove spam links are always harmless. It shows why timing alone is insufficient: the proposed cause should match the affected pages and provide a credible explanation for the observed change.
Reduce risk with a manageable routine
Focus on habits that help prevent damage and make changes easier to investigate:
- Secure access: Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available. Remove unnecessary administrator access.
- Maintain the website: Keep your content management system and plugins updated. Maintain backups and check that you can restore them.
- Keep a change log: Record releases, redirects, indexing changes, and agency link-building work.
- Monitor meaningful signals: Review Search Console messages, important landing-page performance, uptime, and unexpected website changes.
- Watch public business information: Check reviews and listing details, and verify unusual requests through established contacts.
Set a review schedule your team can sustain. Treat active security warnings and outages as immediate issues rather than waiting for the next routine check.
Your next step: document one testable problem
Start an incident record with the first observed date, affected URLs, screenshots or exports, relevant site changes, and the next check that could confirm or weaken your explanation.
For example: “Category-page clicks declined after the template release; inspect whether Google processed an unintended indexing restriction.”
That gives your developer, host, or SEO specialist a concrete problem to investigate. Fix what the evidence supports, record the result, and reassess anything that remains unexplained.
