The Google Search algorithm is the collection of automated systems Google uses to select and order results for a search. These systems evaluate many signals to identify relevant, useful information. If you run a website, focus on making your pages accessible, answering the reader’s question, and supporting your answers with reliable evidence. When traffic changes, first establish what changed: whether Google can find the page, whether it appears in results, or whether people click it.
How Google finds and ranks pages
Google describes three stages of Search:
- Crawling: Google discovers URLs through sources such as links and sitemaps. Its crawler, Googlebot, visits accessible pages to retrieve their content.
- Indexing: Google analyzes the content and may store information about it in its index, a large database. It also identifies duplicate pages and selects a representative version, called the canonical page.
- Serving results: When someone searches, Google finds relevant information in its index and uses its systems to decide what to show and in what order.
Publishing a page does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or display it. An indexed page can also fail to appear prominently for a particular search. What affects Google rankings?
Google’s explanation of ranking results highlights five broad areas:

Their importance varies by query. Fresh information matters more for breaking news than for the definition of a familiar word. Where E-E-A-T fits
E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Google uses this framework to describe qualities its systems aim to recognize, with trust at the center.
E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor. Human quality raters use related guidelines to evaluate Search, but their ratings do not directly determine how a page ranks. For an editor, the useful questions are concrete: Who created this? What supports the claims? Does the author have relevant knowledge or experience? Can the reader check the evidence?
What names like BERT and PageRank mean
Different systems perform different jobs:
- BERT helps Google understand how combinations of words express meaning and intent.
- RankBrain helps connect words with concepts, including when a page does not use the exact search phrase.
- PageRank analyzes links between pages and remains part of Google’s core ranking systems.
- SpamBrain is among the systems Google uses to detect spam.

Why algorithm updates can change rankings
Google continually changes Search, including smaller changes it does not announce individually. A core update makes broad changes to its ranking systems. It does not target a particular website or page, and a decline following one does not by itself establish that a site violated a rule. New or improved competing content can also change which results best serve a search. Google’s core update guidance.
A spam update improves systems that detect spam. Sites affected by one should examine the relevant policies and address violations. Google’s explanation of spam updates.

How to check the latest update
As of September 14, 2026, the most recent update listed in Google’s ranking update history was the August 2026 spam update. It rolled out from August 18 through August 21 and applied globally across languages. Official rollout details.
Use that history to check the type of update and its start and completion dates. A matching date is a reason to investigate, not proof of what caused a particular site’s decline.
What to improve on your website
Make each page’s purpose clear
Start with the task a visitor needs to complete. Someone looking for a definition needs a clear explanation. Someone comparing options needs meaningful differences and trade-offs. Someone ready to buy needs enough product information to make a decision.
Use the words your audience recognizes in the title, main heading, and relevant body text. Add descriptive links from related pages so readers and Google can find the content. These practices align with Google Search Essentials.
Hypothetical example: A person searching for “how to clean a cast iron skillet” needs cleaning steps and relevant precautions. A page that spends most of its space on cookware history leaves that task unfinished. Move the instructions near the beginning and keep background material only where it helps explain a step.
Add evidence and useful detail
Give readers something they can use: a worked calculation, a comparison with clear criteria, documented testing, an explanatory diagram, or a practical example. Use firsthand evidence when you have it, and label hypothetical examples when you do not.
Explain where important facts come from and update information when it changes. Google explicitly says it has no preferred word count and warns against changing dates without substantially changing the content. Let the reader’s task determine the length. Google’s content self-assessment guidance.
Fix access problems and make the page usable
For pages you want in Search, check that Googlebot can access them, that they return a successful response, and that their content is indexable. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to investigate an important page. An accidental noindex instruction can prevent indexing; blocking crawling with robots.txt is a different control. Then read the page on a phone. Can you reach the answer, use its controls, and read without disruptive overlays? Review loading performance and Core Web Vitals as part of that work. Avoid manipulative shortcuts
Repeated keywords cannot supply a missing answer. Buying links to pass ranking credit, hiding text for search engines, and producing large numbers of low-value pages primarily to manipulate rankings can violate Google’s spam policies. Paid advertising and sponsorship links are a relevant exception: Google permits them when they are appropriately qualified, such as with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Google’s link spam policy.
Do AI Overviews and AI Mode require different SEO?
Google says its existing SEO fundamentals also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Keep important explanations available as text, make relevant pages easy to find through internal links, and provide accurate supporting evidence. These are useful priorities across Search’s different presentations.
How to investigate a drop in Google traffic
Start in Google Search Console’s Search results Performance report. It shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. An impression records an appearance in results; click-through rate, or CTR, is clicks divided by impressions. Average position summarizes the position of the topmost result for the selected site or grouping, rather than a permanent ranking. Search Console metric definitions.
Use this sequence to choose your next action:
- Compare equivalent data. Use equal-length completed periods and consistent country, device, and search-type filters. Identify which pages and queries lost clicks. Consider whether the same seasonal pattern appeared the previous year.
- Check for technical trouble. Review Page Indexing, inspect affected URLs, and look at recent site changes. Also check Search Console’s Security Issues and Manual Actions reports. Google’s traffic investigation guide.
- Check update timing. For a suspected core update effect, Google recommends waiting at least a full week after rollout finishes before comparing performance with a period before the update began. Fix an obvious outage or accidental indexing block immediately; that waiting period is for assessing the update’s effect. Google’s recommended comparison timing.
- Separate the symptoms. Falling impressions can reflect lost visibility or lower search demand. Stable impressions with fewer clicks point toward a CTR issue worth investigating. - Make a change you can explain. Record the affected page, the evidence, your proposed fix, and the date. For example: “Readers cannot find the compatibility information, so we will put the supported models beside the instructions.” Avoid changing several unrelated things at once when you want to understand their effects.
Worked example: fewer clicks with the same average position
This is a hypothetical example using invented numbers. Assume you compare two completed 28-day periods for one page and one query, with the country fixed to the United States, device fixed to mobile, and search type fixed to Web.

Clicks fell 40%, but the displayed average position did not change. The arithmetic is straightforward: 10,000 impressions at 5% CTR produced 500 clicks; the same impressions at 3% CTR produced 300.
Your next investigation should examine the title and snippet actually displayed, competing listings, and the surrounding search results. Check daily position data too, because an unchanged average can conceal variation.
These checks could reveal why fewer people clicked, but the table alone cannot establish the cause. It would be premature to conclude that a core update demoted the page or that rewriting the entire article would solve the problem.

Choose one important page and write down the task it should help a visitor complete. Check its indexing status, read it as a first-time visitor, and review its Search Console data. Then make the improvement supported by that evidence, whether that means fixing access, clarifying the answer, adding useful proof, or improving how the page is presented.
