    Before you file

Read your shortlist down a phone line before you pay for anything. Say each name once, then spell it — any name that needs spelling twice will leak every customer who hears about you second-hand. Then run two more filters that kill most candidates fast: does the name still fit when you add a second product line, and does it survive being written in lowercase with no spaces? Your LLC's legal name and the name on your sign do not have to match, so choose the brand you actually want and register the legal wrapper around it.

Does my LLC name have to be the same as my brand name?

No. Most states let you register a trading name, often called a DBA or fictitious name, that differs from the legal name on your formation documents. Founders regularly file something plain and trade under the brand they market. Check your own state's filing rules and fees before you commit to running two names.

How do I check a name is actually free?

Run three checks in this order: your state's business entity search, a federal trademark search at the USPTO, then the domain and the social handles. A clear state search only means the name is free to register in that one state. It says nothing about trademark rights, which can stop you using a name nationally even after your filing is accepted.

Should I buy the .com if only a variant is available?

Buy the exact match if you can afford it. If it is gone, add a short real word such as get, try, or your city, rather than taking a hyphen or a number, both of which people mistype and then drop when they retype your address. A .co or .io is fine for a software product and risky for a local service business, where customers default to typing .com.

What makes a generated name usable rather than just available?

Three things: you can say it once and be understood, it holds up in lowercase with no accidental second word appearing at the seam, and it does not box you into a single product. Test the seam by writing it out as a domain with no spaces, because that is where compound names go wrong. If you sell abroad, check the word in the languages of your two biggest markets.
